KIRKUS REVIEW

LAST DINER STANDINGA waitress helps a friend charged with assaulting her worthless ex-husband.

Rose Strickland (Diners, Dives & Dead Ends, 2012) is having a hard time getting into the holiday spirit this year. As always, her mother is full of advice about the careers she could pursue if she just had the ambition to do more than sling hash at Ma’s Diner. Meanwhile, Ma’s stepped up the pace by going head-to-head with Rudy’s Roundup. Since Rudy’s been muscling in on Ma’s early morning business, Ma abandons her breakfast-only policy, producing a dizzying array of lunch specials that run Rose and her best friend, Roxy Block, off their feet without generating an extra dime in tips. Then, Janelle Johnson, Rose’s study buddy from Huntingford City College, calls to say that someone beat up her ex-husband right after Janelle came by to hit him up for child support and throw a little furniture around too. Now, Sheik “Asshat” Johnson is in a coma, and Janelle’s in the slammer. Rose looks for other suspects, starting with Crystal Waters, the stripper whose appearance in Janelle’s bed sent her marriage to the showers. She unearths many prospects, including Crystal’s other boyfriend, Sheik’s other lovers and the other lovers’ boyfriends. The clue that sends Rose careening, though, is a pile of pictures stashed at Sheik’s apartment of Thomas Sullivan, the bad boy who makes Rose’s pulse beat faster. Rose is convinced that Sheik’s criminal connections, not his ex’s wrath, put him out for the count. But convincing hard-assed Officer Andre Thomas and cute Officer Mike Goedecker may be even harder than convincing Ma to go back to bacon and eggs.  Austin’s second course has the menu of feisty underemployed gal detective with a side order of romance down pat.

Last Diner Standing by Terri L Austin

LAST DINER STANDINGLast Diner Standing by Terri L Austin is the second book in the “Rose Strickland” mystery series. Publisher: Henery Press, December 2012

Rose Strickland is having a blue Christmas. Her friend is arrested for attempted murder, her sexy bad guy crush is marked by a hit man, and her boss is locked in an epic smackdown with a rival diner. Determined to save those she loves, Rose embarks on an investigation more tangled than a box of last year’s tree lights. With her eclectic gang at the ready, Rose stumbles across dead bodies, ex-cons, chop shops, jealous girlfriends, jilted lovers, and a gaggle of strippers in a battle for freedom she might not survive.

OMG! There’s no sophomore slump here in the second book starring spitfire Rose Strickland. When her friend is jailed, Rose knowing she is innocent sets out on a course using any means necessary to free her friend including breaking and entering and allying herself with a person of nefarious distinction.

This fast-paced and action-filled story kept me plowing through the pages as fast as I could because I had to know what happens next in this thrilling and riveting drama. When the chips are down, Rose is there and I was rooting for her as she took on everything thrown at her to help her friend. This is a great read and I’m looking forward to the next book with Rose and her friends in this terrific series.

Blogroll: Review from Plot Driven

Diners, Dives, and Dead Ends by Terri L. Austin

DINERS, DIVES & DEAD ENDSRose Strickland left the expensive, all-girl college her parents picked out for her and is now making her own way as a diner waitress and part-time local college student.  Her friends – Axton, the stoner computer geek, Roxy, fellow waitress, former juvenile delinquent, and fashion pioneer, Janelle, single mom and fellow student, and Ma, the owner of the diner – may not impress her country club parents, but they’re loyal and help her out any way they can.  Though she doesn’t waste any time describing herself, she must be very attractive as 5 different men are madly in love with her.  Otherwise, she’s tenacious, scrappy, sassy, self-aware, and just all kinds of awesome.  In this first of a series, a very nervous Axton leaves his backpack with Rose for safekeeping and then disappears, and Rose does all sorts of risky things to find him.

I’m getting awfully close to being unable to say, “I don’t read mysteries,”  since I keep reading and writing positive reviews for them.   I suppose what I really mean is, “I don’t read John Grisham, James Patterson, serial killer books, or any sort of military based thriller.”  But that takes an awful lot longer to say.  I like old fashioned whodunit structure with quirky characters and realistic dialogue.  This one definitely fits into that category. book review: diners, dives & dead ends

Action-packed from page one with unexpected twists and turns along the way, Terri L. Austin’s Diners, Dives & Dead Ends offers plenty of intrigue for fans of mystery — and a little romance.  Rose Strickland is a 24-year-old who is working at Ma’s Diner and taking a couple of classes at her community college while she figures out what she wants from life. Formerly a child of privilege, her life circumstances are different than the ones her parents planned for her.

Life already off track, it goes even farther off the deep end when her best friend Axton shows up at the diner and asks her to hold on to his backpack for him. He then goes missing. Rose must turn to her long-time friends and new ones as she tries to find him. [Read more...]

CLP Blog Tours: Spotlight & Interview with Terri L. Austin

Thanks to Terri L. Austin for letting me interview her today for her stop on CLP Blog Tours for Diners, Dives & Deads. Please visit her tour page for more information and a giveaway. Please, tell us a little bit about you, who’s Terri L. Austin?

I’m a writer, wife, and mom to two. My youngest went off to college this fall, so this is the first time in forever that I haven’t had kids in the house. I’m officially an empty nester. Or as I like to call it—free. My husband works from home as well, so we meet up for coffee breaks, lunch, and make dinner together.

What was your favorite part of the writing of Diners, Dives & Dead Ends?

I love my characters. I never know what they’ll say or do next. I like to wake up every morning and wonder what they have in store for me. Rose, my main character, is a bit of an underdog. After turning her back on her wealthy parents and their overbearing ways, Rose is a waitress and part-time student. I hope readers can relate to her and her struggles.

I also write a lot of humor. So I love snappy, witty dialogue. To me, dialogue and quirky characters are the best part of writing.

Tell us why we should read your book.

If you’re looking for a laugh or a fun mystery, this book is for you. Roxy Block, Rose’s best friend is a bit of a loose cannon. As Rose navigates the mystery, she has Roxy by her side. Which isn’t always helpful, but it’s always funny.

Also, if you love hot bad guys—Diners is your book. And really, who doesn’t love a hot bad guy?

How did you get the idea to write Diners, Dives & Dead Ends?

I wanted a heroine the reader can root for. I like to think Rose is a good candidate. She’s unsure about her life and her future, but she keeps trying to figure it out. When her friend, Axton, goes missing, Rose is determined to find him.

My goal was to write a book about a sassy heroine and her missing stoner friend. I wanted to show loyalty, friendship, and let the reader have a lot of laughs along the way. I basically wrote the type of book I love to read.

What was your favorite character from Diners, Dives & Dead Ends?

That’s a hard one. I love them all. Rose, of course, since she’s my heroine and we see everything through her perspective. Roxy is a snarky, loveable oddball. Ma, Rose’s boss, is almost eighty, but thinks she’s still twenty-five and insists on tagging along. And then there’s Sullivan, the aforementioned hot bad guy. I really can’t choose. It’s like asking a mom which kid is her favorite. She may have one, but she’ll never admit it.

Are there any songs you could list as the theme of this book or any of your characters?

It’s an oldie, but Me and My Friends by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Freaks of a feather stick together.

Can you give any details of the second part in Rose Strickland Mystery Series?

LAST DINER STANDING comes out December 3rd and Rose Strickland is having a blue Christmas. Her friend is arrested for attempted murder, her sexy bad guy crush is marked by a hit man, and her boss is locked in an epic smackdown with a rival diner. Determined to save those she loves, Rose embarks on an investigation more tangled than a box of last year’s tree lights. With her eclectic gang at the ready, Rose stumbles across dead bodies, ex-cons, jilted lovers, and a gaggle of strippers as she searches for the truth. What she finds will leave her entrenched in a battle for freedom she might not survive.

Diners, Dives & Dead Ends (A Rose Strickland Mystery) by Terri L. Austin (Author Guest Post / Book Review / Contest Giveaway)

In association with Chick Lit Plus Blog Tours, Jersey Girl Book Reviews welcomes Terri L. Austin, author of Diners, Dives & Dead Ends (A Rose Strickland Mystery – Book 1)!

Author Guest Post

Hello, Jersey Girl readers! And thank you, Kathleen, for having me on your blog today. It’s a pleasure to be here!

My name is Terri L. Austin and I’m the author of Diners, Dives & Dead Ends. My humorous mystery debut features heroine, Rose Strickland. Rose is a former rich girl who turned her back on her wealthy parents and their overbearing ways to strike out on her own.

Rose was fun to write. She’s a complex character and a girl you’d want as your BFF. She’s loyal to her friends—a quirky bunch—smart, and hard-working. She hasn’t quite figured her life out, but she’s trying. I wanted a likable heroine who’s a bit of an underdog, but has a lot of heart. I like to think Rose fits the bill.

The secondary characters in Diners made me laugh out loud. Roxy was a blast to write. Inspired by the Loli girls my daughter saw on her trip to Japan, Roxy follows her own path. And it’s sometimes a strange one. Then there’s Ma, Rose’s boss. She’s a sassy senior who likes to hang with her girls. And that’s fine. As long as she doesn’t break a hip while she’s doing it. Axton, an affable stoner with a secret, is Rose’s friend from her old life. And then there’s the smoking hot bad guy who makes Rose forget she’s a good girl. [Read more...]
